WE ARE FRIOSUR

Friosur begins out at sea, with the fleet and its crew.

From casting the nets to unloading at the port.
From the darkness of the deep to the whiteness of ice.

From fish to seafood, the hands of seafarers
provide the first push toward a transformation…”

We are pleased to present our first Sustainability Report from Pesquera Friosur, a milestone that undoubtedly marks another important moment for our company, which is now nearing four decades of operations.

Since we began this great journey in Puerto Chacabuco in 1985, we have always sought to conduct our operations—both at sea and on land—in a harmonious way, guided by two principles that have remained unchanged over time: the protection of marine resources upon which we depend, and our socio-economic contribution to the Aysén Region and its people.

We understand that these two principles are essential for the future of the activities we carry out in one of the most pristine natural environments in Chile and the world. They are also the key to the economic and labor sustainability of our workers, who have been able to grow and develop both professionally and personally alongside their families. The sustainability of employment is a core focus for us. Looking to the future of Chile and an Aysén Region that shines and opens to the world through its human talents and natural wealth, we believe Friosur is a company that can share valuable experiences with other regions of the country.

The workers’ ownership stake in the company through the Friosur Workers’ Cooperative in 2020 is a true reflection of this. Its creation is part of the long-term strategic alliance we have with the Aysén community, where we are one of the leading private employers. This initiative demonstrates that collaborative, long-term solutions are possible for the challenges we face in our daily work because, in the end, we are all partners in this project called Friosur.

The Cooperative was also designed as a way to ensure our workers have a solid retirement, which will help them face their later years more securely. This is not only about the economic aspect, but also about a community element, as the work relationships transform into deeper connections with a company that continues its journey thanks to the efforts of its employees and the valuable support of a community of former employees who ensure its success and future. This comprehensive well-being of the Aysén community was also strengthened through the Santa Teresa de los Andes School, which opened its doors in 1995. Since then, the school has been dedicated to forming well-rounded individuals who achieve excellence in their learning, fostering the spirit of effort and a commitment to quality work.

The world today calls for us to take further steps toward conservation while simultaneously presenting new challenges for each of us who work with natural resources. This is the correct approach for building a sustainable industry for the future, one that produces high-quality food for direct human consumption in Chile and the most demanding global markets, while also providing formal and stable employment.

Friosur has a clear commitment to preserving marine resources in the southern waters. Fisheries research is a vital task for the state, and in this effort, private companies can and should contribute as well. A demonstration of this is our unwavering support for the research work carried out by the Center for Fisheries Studies (CEPES), aimed at protecting resources and understanding the sustainable levels of capture each season.

In addition to this, we need a clear vision and firm decisions to combat social challenges that have persisted for decades. We are not only talking about the geographical distance from decision-making centers that impact our communities, but also the need to adapt local government practices to the specific needs of the people who live, work, and contribute to the nation’s success in each remote corner of our rugged, yet majestic geography. Decentralization remains an unfinished task in Aysén.

As a company and as the Friosur family, we will continue to support our authorities and the people of our region to make Aysén an exemplary place to live, work, and contribute to the greatness of our region and country.

Friosur looks toward the future today, towards the vast horizon of the southern sea in which we have sailed for so many decades. This report that we now share with you is a true reflection of this new perspective.

Since its inception in Aysén in 1985, our company has integrated sustainability as a core principle in the development of its operations—a path that is irreversible, but with many rewards. Our essential goal is for Pesquera Friosur to become more efficient in its actions both on land and at sea, without losing sight of what has always been our focus: the people—our employees, customers, the environment, and the communities we engage with.

With this vision in mind, we are developing an investment plan that is currently underway. Central to this plan is the goal of getting closer to our final customers by offering them higher-value products while maintaining the high-quality standards that define us, always striving to improve them further. To achieve this, it is crucial that we advance along the commercial chain, and today, we are taking important steps to open a new chapter in our productive operations and the development of our markets and clients, which we have consolidated after nearly forty years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication.

By 2025, we aim to consolidate a planning and management model that views our fishing business in an integrated way, from marketing to catches. This presents the challenge of having the best fishing strategy and its subsequent utilization, based on the quotas assigned and the sustainable volumes available each season, always focused on producing goods that will allow us to cross new boundaries and satisfy the most demanding markets, both nationally and internationally.

We are working to reinforce our fleet by incorporating a ship that will help sustain our current operations and allow us to project future medium- and long-term catches, which will result in improved efficiency and fishing performance. In addition, we are undertaking a modernization project at our plant in Puerto Chacabuco, Aysén. Part of this strategy has also been the opening of sales outlets in Coyhaique, Punta Arenas, and more recently in Santiago, as a way to bring the healthy food of southern Chile to consumers across the country. We want more Chileans to enjoy quality products, free of additives, and presented with care and dedication by the hands of workers who are owners of their own company.

ABOUT THIS REPORT

At Friosur, we are pleased to share with you our first Sustainability Report. Through this document, we aim to reflect our nearly 40-year commitment to the development of the Aysén Region along its coastline and to the production of high-quality, value-added seafood for human consumption. We present our social, economic, and environmental management, supported by data from activities carried out in 2023.

Materiality Definition

Materiality refers to the identification and prioritization of the issues that are most relevant and significant both for the organization and its stakeholders.

A comparative analysis of the industry (benchmarking) was conducted at both the local and international levels. This action allowed us to understand the current state of reporting in the industrial fishing sector. Additionally, relevant documentation, news, and internal communications were analyzed to identify the key milestones of the year and the most important management issues.

With the gathered information, a preliminary list was created, incorporating the issues identified in the comparative analysis and document review. Through this process, a list of material topics was identified, which was then presented in a meeting with the company’s management team and through a survey to various stakeholder groups for evaluation
